<text>This study is an investigation of Dr. Laura Jane Harper's tenure, achievements, and contributions to Virginia Tech from 1949-1980. Throughout Virginia Tech's history, examples of leadership, scholarship, and service have been recorded about students, faculty, and administrators; however, female administrators are overlooked in these collections. Using archival and interview data collection techniques and historical biographical methods, we will examine Harper's influences to the profession, significant contributions in the areas of scholarship, administration, and as a mentor for minorities and women.</text>

<text>This thesis analyzes coeducation as a process between 1914 and 1964 at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI), as it was called during the period of study. The date for women's full-time admission came in 1921, but this thesis argues that, in the process of coeducation, the date for official access represents only one marker for VPI. Since women had taken courses during the summer before 1921 and did not encounter a welcoming environment after that date, this thesis contends that the relative importance of this "first" needs to be put in perspective. This thesis explores VPI as a case study to analyze how society's gender roles and women's place affected the decision to admit women and their treatment on campus after access. Examining social, political, and economic events in Virginia and the nation, this thesis places VPI within the context of events at the time. In particular, this thesis discusses how federal legislation, during the 1910s, prompted VPI to admit women, an area previously unexplored by historians of higher education. Throughout the period of study, this thesis argues that VPI - its students and administration - limited women's access and inclusion on campus in an effort to maintain its identity as a white, male, military institution.</text>

In the spring of 1994, the Women's Center opened our doors in Lane Hall, with the mission to promote a campus community that is safe, equitable and supportive for women and that celebrates their experiences, achievements and diversity. The Center's first director was Penny Burge, one of three professional staff members and seven volunteers who carried out our daily functions. In 1995-1996, the Center moved to Price House, which we called home for the next eight years. In 2000, Ellen Plummer was appointed director. In 2004, the Center relocated to 206 Washington Street and grew to seven professional staff and 90+ volunteers. In 2008, Christine Dennis Smith and Anna LoMascolo were appointed co-directors. Today the Women's Center is home to 9 professional staff and scores of student workers, volunteers, and interns, as well as award-winning programs and compassionate counseling and advocacy services.</text>

<text>In 1992-1993, the Coordinating Council on Women's Concerns proposed the establishment of a Women's Center at Virginia Tech. In 2004 the Center relocated to 206 Washington Street and grew to seven professional staff and 90+ volunteers. In 2008, Christine Dennis Smith and Anna LoMascolo were appointed co-directors. Today we are proud to call the Center home to 9 professional staff and scores of student workers, volunteers, and interns, as well as award-winning programs and compassionate counseling and advocacy services.</text>
