An account of the resource
Lucy Lee Lancaster was born in Blacksburg, Virginia in 1905 and lived there until she died in 1989. She was one of the first women admitted to Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute (popularly known as VPI), and after graduating in 1925, she went on to earn her MLS from Columbia University Library School. She worked at the VPI library for the rest of her career. The Lancaster papers contain biographical materials, family papers, genealogy research, correspondence with family, friends, and business contacts, membership materials from local organizations, and travel memorabilia from her numerous national and international trips.

Some of the material in this collection pre-dates the beginning of Burruss' presidency. The physical collection contains records on a wide range of topics (see below), including the admission of women and early women staff. Digitized items highlight this particular history.

<span>Women students at Virginia Polytechnic Institute were not allowed to be in </span><em>The Bugle</em><span> yearbook. For several years after they were first admitted, they produced their own yearbook, called </span><em>The Tin Horn</em><span>. Four issues of the </span><em>The Tin Horn</em><span> were published. The 1925 and 1929 issues were produced by hand. Issues in 1930 and 1931 were published by professional printers.</span><br /><br /><span>The 1925 yearbook included original photographs, type pages, and handwritten captions.</span>

Files in this collection relate to individuals and families connected to the local area (Blacksburg, Montgomery County, and Southwest Virginia) and/or to Virginia Tech and its history.
Selected folders haven been digitized for inclusion in the History of Women at Virginia Tech project.
